Four Hours

Lunch break: noon – 1 p.m.
The Secrets of Egyptian Dance

Based on Joana Saahirah´s book “The Secrets of Egypt – Dance, Life & Beyond.” Introduction to The Magic Of Egyptian Dance beyond the steps, the choreographies and exoticism. What lies beneath, what makes it The Language of the Soul.
A pioneer course that gathers the SECRETS of Egyptian Dance, what makes it a magical, genuine art form and a unique tool of self-discovery and well-being.
When Joana Saahirah started travelling the world, to teach, perform and lecture, after 8 years living inside her Egyptian cocoon, she found the essence of Egyptian Dance was nowhere to be seen; Choreographies? CHECK! Competitions? CHECK! Fancy belly tricks? CHECK. The core, soul and purpose of Egyptian Oriental Dance? Nowhere to be found.
The course (& the book) were born from this discovery.
We´ll explore a “Majancé” (entrance on stage) and its various changes, music/dance styles, moods, feelings, rhythms and melodies as an exercise to work some of the EGYPTIAN DANCE SECRETS Joana learned during her career in Egypt.
Concepts like The SACRED WOUND, INVISIBLE DANCE or the RIGHT to MADNESS – among others – will open doors that you never imagined existed.
Technique & small choreography.

Sunday
Six Hours

10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Om Kolthoum; Dancing the Voice of the Orient – The Art of Tarab.

Oum Kolthoum was, and still is, the Voice of the Orient, and her music represents the highest point of artistic expression in Egypt.
Learning how to listen and interpret Om Kolthoum is a master degree in Oriental Dance.
Concepts like TARAB, orchestration, interpretation, technique and personal expression within the music will be at the heart of this workshop that will make you fall in love – forever – with the true beauty of the Egyptian Classical repertoire.
Technique and illustrative short choreography.

2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Eskandaranie with Mellaya

The Mediterranean Mermaid is back! – The character of the “bint il balad” (daughter of Egypt) at her best!
Dance from Alexandria with “mellaya” (traditional garment women used to wear in public in the big cities like Cairo and Alexandria) – cocky and coquette, feminine, provocative, funny, light and filled with daring sensuality.
How to use the “mellaya” creatively, and how to rediscover your body and its sensations from the perspective of an Egyptian woman mind.
Expect the unexpected!
Technique & choreography.
*Please bring a mellaya or heavy veil.
