A Choreographer’s Weekend with April Rose: June 16-18, 2017

I am so excited to have April Rose join us for a weekend of workshops on June 16-18, 2017. Eleven hours of study to take your dance and creative process to the next level!

Timeless Bellydance
Friday, June 16th 7:00pm-9:00pm

Learn an artfully arranged combination of tribal and raqs orientale movements, layered with sagaat patterns, to create a rooted and regal vision of bellydance that highlights the essential principals of this dance form and spans across subgenre labels. In this dance, we aim to distill the form down to its timeless and trendless beauty.

Choreographers Workshop: Exposure
This is a condensed version of a full week-long intensive that April Rose will offer in November 2017 in Austin.
$250 until 4/30; $280 after

Informed by her Masters Degree in Dance from UCLA, April Rose shares her knowledge of the tools of choreography composition, a step-by-step process for making dances, application of these concepts to in-class projects, and entrepreneurial tips for how to organize one’s life as a professional dance maker.

The Tools
Saturday, June 17th 10:00am-1:00pm
Participants learn how to make a dance with technique, intellect, and spirit that keeps audience engaged by using such tools of choreography-making as dynamic, time, space, etc.

The Process
Saturday, June 17th 2:00pm-5:00pm
April Rose guides participants through a detailed, step-by-step, exampl of one way to make dances from the inception of an idea to completion. We discuss strategies for facing creative blocks, for keeping your project on schedule, and for making a meaningful dance using the tools of choreography composition. Students are invited to bring an idea of their own for a dance and/or a piece of music they would like to choreograph to.

The Practie
Sunday, June 18th 10:00am-1:00pm
In this workshop designed for current and apsiring professional dance makers, April Rose shares strategies for organizing one’s life as a self-motivated entrepreneurial artist. Participants are invited to do pattern recognition on their lives, create detailed production schedules, discover ways to stack functions, set specific goals, recognize helpful and harmful habits, and hone their creative spirit in the face of deadlines.

An internationally sought-after teacher and performer, April Rose’s 17 year-long bellydance career includes such accomplishments as being a former principal dancer in Bellydance Superstars and UNMATA. April has a Masters degree in Dance Studies from UCLA and a BA in Dance, for which she was trained in choreographic method, multiple dance techniques, and critical dance theory. A dynamic and encouraging teacher, April uses all these skills in her thoughtful, rigorous, and playful approach to teaching bellydance. She is especially focused on the history of bellydance, its transformative potential, and its malleability for creative innovation. April Rose was the first certified teacher in Amy Sigil’s ITS format, she tours internationally, and runs intensives and regular classes at her dance studio in Austin Texas, Rose Movement Studio (www.rosemovement.com).
